The importance of mangrove forests
Mangrove forests are valuable coastal ecosystems. They provide habitats for numerous animals and plants and serve as nurseries for a wide variety of species. Their intricate root systems can stabilize coastal areas and reduce the impacts of coastal erosion, waves, and strong winds. Mangroves also play a very important role as carbon sinks, which has a positive impact on the global climate system.
The Yuu’n Mee Mangrove Reforestation Project
We pay particular attention to mangroves. Since 2010, we have been implementing one of our passion projects, the Yuu’n Mee Mangrove Reforestation Project. In the designated reforestation area on the east coast of Thailand’s Samut Sakhon Province, we have grown and planted 270,000 mangrove trees since the project started.
And this is how we
implement the project:
From seedling to planting
The entire process, from collecting naturally fallen mangrove propagules (seedlings) to planting them, takes several months. Only naturally fallen propagules of Rhizophora apiculata (Small-leaf Mangrove) and Rhizophora mucronata (Loop-root Mangrove) are collected from healthy existing mangrove forests. They are then nurtured year-round in specialized nurseries. After three to six months, the young mangrove trees are strong enough to be transplanted into designated restoration areas.
